Most of the time it really does seem like my boys are doing everything at once.

Take your lens off the camera. Turn it around. Hold it up to the body backwards, with the mount facing outwards. You can do fantastically close macro photography with it that way. But you have to watch out because the depth of field is [...]

Coming into town this morning I saw a weird shape against the mountains, and I knew it must be a hot air balloon. A cold clear morning like this is perfect for ballooning. But it was strange, there were extra lumps on it, and it wasn’t [...]

I love the Motel Washoe sign. It’s located in Washoe City at the north end of the Washoe Valley, right on Hwy 395. There was a small motel here for years, and I imagine 40 years ago the sign was bright and [...]
Keirra has been taking horseback riding lessons this summer. Today I went down to watch her and to grab some pictures of her and her steed. Here she is with “Gladness” on a ranch in far east Carson City.
All the pictures can be seen on Flickr.

As a follow-on to yesterday’s post about the ride on the Virginia and Truckee Railroad, here is my video footage from the day. It’s split into three parts, as you can see.

A deep, melodic whistle pierced the morning silence. It echoed off a dozen surfaces in the sloping valley, creating a harmony that lasted long after the original source had stopped. As the last notes faded away the assembled crowd, the few of [...]

I found these photos at the Willamina & Grand Ronde Railway history page. They show the rail yards in Grand Ronde, Oregon, and one steam engine in particular. Now you may be wondering why these photos from Oregon are in [...]
Probably the worst part of the renovation this weekend was that I had to tear up perfectly good tile just because it was a couple of shades lighter than the new tiles I laid down next to it. I tried to justify leaving it for the longest time, but the [...]

I was passing though the Washoe Valley last night, and the harvest moon was just too great to pass up. Put your camera on a tripod, and it almost looks like daylight.
Also, the old [...]
I’m back at it again with the house renovations. This project has been going on for six years, and has included redoing both bathrooms, ripping out the whole kitchen, and replacing the carpets in the whole house with tile and laminate flooring. And it’s not [...]
Dave Winer: I’m worried about the web.
We pour so much passion into dynamic web apps hosted by companies we know very little about. We do it without retaining a copy of our data. We have no idea how much it costs them to keep hosting what we create, so [...]
After all weekend chasing the $48 train up and down the Comstock, we went back to Carson City and rode the $5 train at the railroad museum. One train’s as good as another for the kids.

Last evening I went up to Virginia City to see off the V&T Railroad. Yesterday was the momentous occasion of the first passenger train between Virginia and Carson City on the new reconstructed line. That last time a passenger train passed between [...]

When photographer Carleton E. Watkins visited Virginia City and the Comstock in the fall of 1876, he had no idea he was viewing the area at its absolute peak. More [...]
Viola is always rescuing animals. This one she pulled out of a bad home just last night. Mistreated and injured, now that she’s out she can start the healing process. And we already found a good home for her!

Some shots from the Lake Tahoe fireworks this year:
The Sweetland Building was built in the 1930s in downtown Carson City Nevada, a solid brick building for the downtown core. In the 1950s the Pine Cone Cafe was a popular hangout for the town’s high school kids. After the Pine Cone, a series [...]
One of the first photographs of Carson City Nevada was taken from the very center of town, at the corner of King and Carson Streets. Taken around 1864, it shows a young city that’s only about 6 years old but already has a couple [...]

One thing I’ve always struggled with is abstract photos. I tend to be too literal, too documentarian, and my eye has trouble seeing things as just shapes. Sunday I found myself at the Railroad Museum, with the locomotives and all [...]

We went to the Minden Farmers’ Market last night. It takes place every Tuesday from 4-8pm, in downtown Minden along Esmeralda Street.
This is pretty cool: Disney has allowed Google to bring its StreetView cameras inside of Disneyland Paris (better known to some as EuroDisney). So now you can roam through DLP just like you would use Google to roam around a city.

It seems like time goes by so fast. Today Sammy played his last game of T-Ball for the 2009 season. Hard to believe it’s been since March that he’s been playing. After the game the whole team headed over to the Pizza Barn for [...]

I’ve been roaming around town at night with my tripod and camera, using long exposures to bring out some of the details in the dark parts of town, as well as some of the buildings that are nicely lit up at night. [...]

There’s nothing wrong with putting up cat photos every so often. Especially when they’re exercises in playing with lighting, depth of field, and portraiture.
The cat is [...]
