The San Francisco 49ers are showing signs of greatness again. It has been a long time. Here a few end-of-season factoids that give me great optimism for next season:
New head coach Mike Singletary is 5-4. That is a better winning percentage than 16 coaches in the NFL. Given [...]
It's a great day for Democrats and Republicans alike. For Democrats, Barack Obama was elected President. For Republicans, there was finally dancing in the streets and Americans greeted as liberators :)
No republican deserves to remain in office after these last eight horrific years. Throw them out. All of them. At every level.
49er coach Mike Nolan was fired yesterday, mid-season. Looks like my prediction was accurate, although I didn't expect it to come true so soon.
I just returned from a wonderful three week vacation to California, divided equally between Lake Tahoe, Lake Almanor, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Unlike two years ago, when I blogged about my vacation every day, I decided to write less, relax more. I limited my writing to [...]
Turns out my prediction of 8-8 was overly optimistic. The Niners finished 5-11. As if to pile on the misery, the New England Patriots finished 16-0, busting a record set by San Francisco for most wins in a single season set in 1984.
A fantastic and spicy twist on the classic. It won't blow out your tastebuds, either. Tastes awesome, and is worth the effort!
Interesting statistic of the day: From September 2006 to April 2007, the percentage of Americans in cellphone-only households for the first time overtook the percentage in landline-only households.
Bill Walsh, who guided the San Francisco 49ers to three Super Bowl championships and six NFC West division titles in his 10 years as head coach, has died at the age of 75:
Walsh died at his Bay Area home early Monday following a long battle with leukemia, [...]
The bear went over the mountain... literally. My neighbour across the street took this photo in her backyard. Click the picture to enlarge.
We took the kids to a pool today. Not ours, but an adjoining neighborhood where we have a lot of friends. While walking toward the diving board I accidentally slipped my right foot under the chain link fence behind the board and ripped a nice gash in [...] Since my last post three months ago...
The last known surviving American female World War I veteran, a refined Civil War buff who in 1916 met with the secretary of the Navy to promote women in the military, has died. She was 109....
In 1916, Winters met with Secretary [...]
Starting today, be careful of what you type into a company email or instant message:
U.S. companies will need to keep track of all the e-mails, instant messages and other electronic documents generated by their employees thanks to new federal rules that go into effect Friday, legal experts say.

Ava has a new little sister. Lena Marie Donaldson was born last night at 7:12 pm PST. She came in at 7 pounds and is 19.25 inches long. Congratulations Dini and Ed! Nicely done!"[I]t’s a huge sea change for our democracy. The framers created a system where we did not have to rely on the good graces or good mood of the president. In fact, Madison [...]
When Mr. Bush can declare ANY citizen to be a terrorist, with or without cause, and deny them all of their civil liberites, I think we can say without exaggeration that we have lost American democracy:
Last week, the White House and three Republican senators announced a terrible deal on... legislation [...]
DAY 22: Saturday - Ed, Alec and I decided the best way to spend our last day of vacation would be to go surfing in Santa Cruz! Summer is NOT the best time to surf here: winter is superior. Nevertheless, Ed is a decent surfer, Alec had never [...]
DAY 19: Wednesday - Just a quiet day by the lake. The kids swam or played on the rope swing. I took the kayak out for an hour into the middle of the lake. It was a wonderfully relaxing sensation to be in such a tiny craft surrounded [...]
DAY 18: Tuesday - Boating day. Woo-hoo! Andy rented a patio boat for the day. We loaded it with a cooler of snacks, beer and water and spent most of the day jumping off the boat into the middle of Lake Almanor. The weather was perfect, as [...]
DAY 17: Monday - We hit Mount Lassen about 10 am. Lassen is an inactive volcano that last erupted in 1915 and sits at the southernmost end of the Cascades, rather than in the northernmost Sierra Nevada range.
DAY 16: Sunday - Lake Almanor is not as big as Lake Tahoe, but it is still impressive in its own right. It is one of the largest man-made lakes in California at 75 square miles. It has good clarity, as most of the water comes in as [...]
DAY 14: Friday - Since we depart Tahoe for Lake Almanor tomorrow morning, today is our final day at the lake. We returned to Sand Harbor, of course, where the weather was perfect: 83 degrees and DRY.
DAY 13: Thursday - We took a beach break and headed over to Squaw Valley.
This world-class ski/snowboarding resort (and former Olympics venue) also hosts summer season recreational activities. Today we wanted to give the kids some pony and horse rides. Seb and [...]
DAY 12: Wedneday - A hot dry day at Sand Harbor. The kids never get tired of playing in the water and creating sand castles. I am just happy to sit under the umbrella and read my book. That, and bouldering, which Alec, Ethan and I [...]
DAY 10: Monday - I arose this morning at seven to go running again with Andy. Yesterday's winds must have continued through the night because it was 39 degrees! Brrr. We chose a 4.5 mile route that we ran two days ago, but decided to run it in [...]
DAY 9: Sunday - We went back to Sand Harbor sans Ethan (fever), Alec (beached out) and Nancy. The wind was whipping pretty strong and clouds kept imposing themselves rudely between us and the sun. It was chilly! We did some swimming but the wind made it so [...] | Borat | ![]() |
