  • Senator Clinton - The Big Winner

    Number of comments: 3

Senator Hilary Clinton’s campaign took a major step towards securing the party’s nomination this week.  The press started attacking her.

    The loser is Barack Obama.

Now the Senator’s poll numbers are dropping and Obama’s are on the rise.  This plays perfectly into the Senator’s hand.

If you wonder why this [...]

  • Is Iowa Sexist?

    Number of comments: 4

I do not normally endorse Presidential candidates.  I help all who ask (and some do) because I feel they all deserve a fair shot at winning or doing well in Iowa.

However, I must take exception to articles I read last week coming from the Clinton campaign.  If [...]

  • I Am Going To Cry

I don’t know the man, but I feel very sorry for him.  I don’t know how he’ll ever recover.

I am writing about poor Stan O’Neal, the former CEO of Merrill Lynch.  Without cause they fired him, shoved him out the door and gave him a very modest separation [...]

  • A Great Victory

This turned out to be a great month for the State of Iowa, thanks in no small measure to the leadership of Governor Chet Culver and the Iowa Republican and Democratic Parties.

Collectively, they kept Iowa first in the nation and in doing so insured that at least the Presidential selection [...]

  • Beware of Pat Robertson

    Number of comments: 4

There could be trouble brewing for the so-called Republican front- runners.

In 1988, Senator Bob Dole and Vice President George Bush were expected to wage a head-to-head battle for the hearts and votes of the GOP faithful in the Iowa Caucus.  Along came Pat Robertson.

To the consternation of political [...]

  • Term limits, you say?

    Number of comments: 3

In response to my tongue-in-cheek writing suggesting that we amend the Constitution to allow President Bush to run again, a writer suggested that what we really

need are term limits for Congress.

As my son would say, “Bad idea, Dad.”

When I was in Congress I was a member of [...]

  • Return what has been lost

    Number of comments: 4

What Iowa needs to do today to make a real contribution to the national debate and the selection of the next President is something that no one, to my knowledge, has thought to suggest.  Let us show the rest of the Country what we have lost.

    Let us help the [...]

  • Lets Amend the Constitution

    Number of comments: 7

There is no question; the Constitution of the United States of America needs amending.  It is in the interest of both political parties to do so.

I am writing about the 22nd Amendment, which prohibits a President from serving more than two terms.  We seriously considered doing it for Ronald Reagan [...]

  • Conventional Wisdom

    Number of comments: 3

One of my favorite movies is “Heaven Can Wait” in which a fellow is prematurely taken from this earth to beyond the pearly gates.  He keeps arguing that he shouldn’t be there.  Finally, in disgust, he is taken before the St. Peter-like character, Mr. Jordan.

The angel reassures Mr. Jordan, being [...]

  • Mitt Romney Supports Boston Legal

    Number of comments: 9

I love Boston Legal, the ABC show about a law firm.
Why, last night in the season opener they had the senior partner arrested for solicitation of prostitution, another lawyer being propositioned by a judge to help her make a baby, the same lawyer having sex, twice, in an elevator [...]

  • A Civics Lesson

    Number of comments: 3

A blogger in response to our last article raised an excellent question. The essence of which is this: Havent the Democrats in Congress broken their word? They promised to stop the war and now they havent.

Just today, the Senate failed to pass legislation to require troops in Iraq, when [...]

  • A Ghost of Times Past

Somewhere in the hereafter, Hubert Humphrey, the former Vice President, has just gone to Saint Peter and received permission to change his eternal registration as a Democrat to a Republican.

Humphrey wants the war stopped and he recognizes that only leadership from a Republican can do it.

    Humphrey should know. [...]

  • Whom The Gods

    Number of comments: 3

I think it was the Greek Euripides who first said, Whom the Gods would destroy, they first make mad.

Any presidential candidate of either party that starts to surge ahead in the polls in either Iowa or New Hampshire should remember this admonition.

Witness from the last time the summer rise of [...]

  • Twenty-four Hours

    Number of comments: 3

My friend, former United States Senator John Culver, used to say, In politics twenty-four hours is a lifetime.

Ask Larry Craig. He was just waiting at the Minneapolis Airport for a connecting flight to go home to Idaho. Three hours later, his political career was over.

A criminal act or even [...]

  • Edwards Comes On Board

Better late than never.  John Edwards, after earlier hesitation noted in this blog, has issued a strong statement endorsing the traditional role of Iowa and New Hampshire.  We can speculate as to why the previous position was taken, but it really doesn’t matter.  Edwards came home to his friends [...]

  • The Edwards Betrayal

”I’m running a national campaign, so I’m going to campaign in the states that are participating in the process,” Edwards told The Associated Press in an interview. “My job is not to make the rules, my job is to run.” August 21, 2007

  • Frustration

    Number of comments: 3

Republicans have to feel frustrated.  Democrats have to feel frustrated.

According to the national media, there are only three Republicans seeking their party’s nomination for President.  Likewise, there are three contenders for President in the party of the donkey.

Trying to find out what a Huckabee, Brownback or Tancredo are [...]

  • Iowa’s Role

    Number of comments: 2

There are always challengers and skeptics who will dispute Iowa and New Hampshire’s role in Presidential politics.

Critics argue that neither state is representative of the country as a whole.  The populations are too white or too rural to really reflect the national will.  But whether these reasons [...]

  • Straw Poll: First impressions and predictions.

What a day! The Republican Presidential Straw Poll was a monster success in Ames. Thousands of Republicans from the four corners of Iowa came to Ames to voice their opinions about who the next President should be, and why.

I wonder how the national press will cover the very enthusiastic Ames [...]

  • Why the Straw Poll is important to every Iowan.

Tomorrow the Republican Party of Iowa will hold the Ames Straw Poll.  This will be the most significant gathering of Republicans in 2007, and perhaps the largest ever.  While the Straw Poll is important to the institution known as the Republican Party of Iowa, its importance extends to, not only [...]
