There is more Zawinul music that I have not heard! There was a Midnight Jam cd that may not have been released in this country - at least I can’t find it. It has this version of the D Flat Waltz, [...]

I just helped my mom close up her house and move to Memphis. We had a farewell lunch with her posse a couple of days before the movers came.

I like this record a lot; here is a cut - Banana Ba Rustenburg mp3. Swing music recycled back through Africa in the 50’s and 60’s. A Joe Zawinul sort of stew of influences. I hate it that he is gone.

I have been taking a little heat about not posting. But. I am still perplexed about how to post music here that does not wind up cataloged in various mp3 aggregator sites that use files from mp3 blogs to create what appears to be [...]

I first became aware of Horace Silver years ago when I looked to see who wrote Song for My Father on a Sugarcane Harris album - I loved the song, loved it played on violin - but that wasn’t representative [...]

The Patient has great health insurance, a bunch competent doctors, and a pleasant suburban hospital with private rooms just down the street. The Patient’s identified ailments are treatable, although there are several of them.

From Guitar on the Go, Wes Montgomery:
I love fried pies. My grandmother would make them from pie crust dough with plums from her yard or apples in the middle and fry them in a skillet. That was the only way I would eat [...]

I like this photo. It says a lot to me. But the subject might not find it flattering. So lets keep it between us.

performed by Randy Weston
Great as his interpretation is, there is a lot more to Randy Weston. Follow the link to his site if just to see the opening graphic.
The skips and pops from the vinyl stop a few seconds in.

Little Henry had a little trouble breathing. So his mother named him for two of his great-grandfathers to drum up a little help.
The next rip from the Monk tribute album that I have been posting - Gary Windo on saxophone and Todd Rundgren playing everything else.

Sitting in the dark and staring out the window
Because raccoons have driven me mad
Another tune from That’s the Way I Feel Now. This one is two Monk sax players, Charlie Rouse (tenor) and Steve Lacy (soprano). As with those before, ripped from vinyl.
Ask Me Now mp3

Man, I am going to miss Molly Ivins. I once heard her say that, unlike many people, she did not believe that dubya was born on 3rd base but thought he had hit a triple. I fall into that group that does believe it, but, as with [...]

It has been difficult for me to describe, in recent years, the difference between Republicans and Democrats. This morning it occurred to me that the difference lies in how one most often uses the word “should”. Most often Democrats propose “we should…” and Republicans propose “you should…”. Yes [...]
